Feeding the bees

The best food for the bees is their own honey. However, if your bees have not been able to build up enough supplies to survive the winter, it may be necessary to provide extra nutrition.

  • Solid feed
    • Solid feed can be given during the colder months when it is too cold for syrups. Solid feed are certainly suitable in early spring when the bees' winter supplies are slowly running out.
Fondant can be fed to your bees in different ways. You can place fondant directly on the windows. This ensures that the bees can access it immediately, and is ideal when the bees are already weakened by food shortage. You can also place the fondant on a queen grid, this ensures that the fondant does not slide between the windows when it becomes softer due to the temperature in the beehive. Finally, you can also put the fondant in a plastic container or in a plastic bag with a slot opening and place it upside down on the cover plate with feeding opening. When the bees are in good condition they will go through the feeding hole to the fondant and eat the fondant from the inside. This is a good method as it will disturb the bees the least and you can easily add more fondant if needed.
In our webshop you can find different brands of solid feeds: Candipolline, Fondabeefruc, Sint Ambrosius, Apifonda, ...
